JFK Had It Right

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I have been doing a lot of study think week on the topic of Spiritual Gifts. I’m writing a curriculum series for our LifeGroups based on the 8 Characteristics of a Growing Disciple. “Serving in Giftedness” is the fourth on the list, but I’m tackling it first because we have a LifeGroup going through this topic now (so I’m “piggybacking” on their series).

The more I study and read on the topic (more blogging to come on that) the more I realize how wrong we get it sometimes. Our focus is just off. We focus too much on our “gifting” and not enough on our “using”. As part of my study my entire paradigm regarding spiritual gifts has changed (more to come on that as well).

This morning I realized that our 35th President had it right in his Inaugural Speech on January 20, 1961. You’ve probably heard the part I’m referring to many times. You can see and hear it here…

In case you can’t read or listen, here’s what he said that’s so important…

“Ask not what your country can do for you.
Ask what you can do for your country.”

It’s the same in the church. He had it right. It applies to spiritual gifts. It applies to our motivation to be a part of a church in general. Let me “paraphrase” it this way…

“Ask not what your church can do for you.
Ask what you can do for your church.”

Or maybe even better yet…

“Ask not what the people in your church can do for you.
Ask what you can do for the people in your church.”

We’re supposed to be about serving and loving others. It’s what we’re supposed to do with our gifts, talents, and passions. It’s how the church works. It’s how we work.

Like I said, JFK had it right.

Hanging with Mr. Z

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Who are the primary people in my sphere of influence? Are they the same type of people that Jesus hung out with?

Yes and no.

One the one hand, Jesus hung out with His disciples. Men who followed Jesus and were dedicated to learning everything they could from Him. Men who left everything to walk in His footsteps. I hang with a group very much like this. Imperfect men and women who are sold out on becoming more like Jesus. They challenge me. They encourage me. They inspire me.

But on the other hand, Jesus hung out with guys like Mr. Z (you’ll have to look it up in Luke 19). And He was constantly criticized for it…

But the people were displeased.
“He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
Luke 19:7, NLT

I don’t know that the same would be said of me…certainly not very often. And this is an area that God is working on in my life. Where am I coming into contact with people that need Him most? A few weeks ago the topic came up in a book we are reading in LifeGroup (Crazy Love). Am I hanging out with “notorious sinners”? Am I feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, taking care of widows and orphans?

Not like I should be…and I’m praying for God to show me how He wants me to be involved at this level. Who does He want me to serve…and how?

Through God’s Eyes

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

As part of my current college course (Spiritual Formation) we have gone through several exercises this week to practice solitude and listening to God’s voice. These are uncomfortable exercise…but that’s supposed to be part of the point as we get out of our comfort zone and learn to hear God speak into our lives. It has been hard. It has been good.

Last night was a 30 minute exercise of silence and listening. After the first 5-10 minutes (I wasn’t watching the clock) God did a LOT of talking. This is probably indicative of how much I haven’t been listening recently..He unloaded on one very specific topic: Having a Servant’s Heart. I won’t go into all of the details, but here are the highlights:

  1. Am I leading from a servant’s heart or am I serving out of simple duty and obligation? (I hate it when He asks questions like this because I rarely like the answer!)
  2. God wants my motive to service…not service because I’m supposed to or because it feeds my ego. (OUCH)
  3. Two examples for me to chew on: Jesus washing His disciples’ feet (He wanted to do it…it wasn’t just a duty) and Philippians 2:4-11.
  4. Here’s the big one: He wants me to really start seeing other’s as He sees them—through God’s eyes!

This is all about my motives for ministry and service. Am I doing it for my own benefit or for God’s benefit? Is my heart truly in the right place? I’m not saying I am serving out of some dark place…but it’s not the best place. It’s for God’s glory not mine. It’s not about me…it’s about Him.

God, grant me a servant’s heart!
