Lindsay’s New Do

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Lindsay has been talking about getting her hair cut for the last few months and she finally took the plunge today. She found a picture online of what she wanted and she and her mom headed off to the salon. The stylist cut it a little shorter than she asked for (why do they do that?), but it still looks great. Here are the pics…

This one makes me want to find my shotgun and get it ready!

Too cute!

Good thing she takes after her mother…sigh.

A Little Comparison, If You Please

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

After listening to President Obama’s first televised press conference on Monday there was one comment he made that caught my attention. As soon as he made the comment my mind re-winded a few years to another president’s inaugural address. The two statements are worlds apart and show a clear difference in ideology.

History will tell which one ends up being right (or “more” right?). Here are the two statements (taken from direct transcripts and in context)…you can draw your own conclusions upon comparison (the emphasis in both is simply to highlight the ideological comparison). For all our sake’s I hope they both end up being right (but I don’t think that will be the case). No more commentary from me…you be the judge…

Exhibit A: President Obama’s Press Conference on 02/09/2009:

It is absolutely true that we can’t depend on government alone to create jobs or economic growth. That is and must be the role of the private sector. But at this particular moment, with the private sector so weakened by this recession, the federal government is the only entity left with the resources to jolt our economy back into life.

It is only government that can break the vicious cycle, where lost jobs lead to people spending less money, which leads to even more layoffs. And breaking that cycle is exactly what the plan that’s moving through Congress is designed to do.

Exhibit B: President Reagan’s Inaugural Address on 01/20/1981:

The economic ills we suffer have come upon us over several decades. They will not go away in days, weeks, or months, but they will go away. They will go away because we as Americans have the capacity now, as we’ve had in the past, to do whatever needs to be done to preserve this last and greatest bastion of freedom.

In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden.

Again, time will tell…thoughts?

I’m Not Dead Yet

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I know I haven’t been around much lately, but “I’m not dead yet”! This month has just been extra busy with school getting back into full swing (Hebrew Prophets), a sermon this Sunday, work, family, and getting ready for a new teaching series in February (and not necessarily in that order). Not to worry though, this too shall pass and I will be back to my “usual” blogging schedule. Something had to give this month, but life will find balance once again (at least I hope it does!).

I hope to post a little more here in near future. In the meantime, here’s a little something to reward your patience and keep you entertained…

Bring Out Your Dead!

Gotta love British humor!

Welcome to 2009!

Our Soul Garage

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

While spending several hours yesterday cleaning out my garage (most of which I did not make a mess of) I got to thinking about how fast the garage got messy since the last time we cleaned it out. It just seems to naturally return to a messy state—with a little help from three “un-named” participants…but they only help it get there faster. As I looked around at the mess I saw missing tools, a bench full of “stuff” and a floor that was a mix of junk, trash, and miscellany.

And I wondered to myself: How did it get like this? Why did I let it go like this for so long? Now it’s so much more work than if I had kept at it. Sigh.

As I dove into the mess I got to thinking about how our spiritual life is like my garage sometimes. It’s easier to just “let it go” and not work at it so hard. But before you know it, there you stand looking at it wondering how it got to be such a mess…and why did I let it go so long? Like my garage, my spiritual life takes time and effort—and it’s best if I work at it a little at a time instead of waiting for it to get to be such a mess!

Yes, I know this isn’t a perfect analogy…but it came to mind while cleaning up the mess. When I was done I sat back and admired the cleanliness and orderliness (is that a word) of all the hard work. I wonder if Jesus does that when He’s done cleaning out our soul garage?

The World’s Shortest Fairy Tale

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

A friend of mine forwarded this to me this morning and I just had to share…regardless of the consequences.

The World’s Shortest Fairy Tale

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl ‘Will you marry me?’

The girl said, ‘NO!’

And the guy lived happily ever after
     and rode motorcycles
          and went fishing
               and hunting
                    and played golf a lot
                         and drank beer
                              and scotch
and left the toilet seat up
                                        and farted whenever he wanted.

THE END

Let the payback commence…

What Does Heaven Smell Like?

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

I have no idea where this question came from yesterday, but in the car one of the kids asked this question. It’s one of those questions only a kid would ask—and it’s kind of fun to think about (although it doesn’t really mean anything in the grander scheme of things).

Here are the answers our gang came up with:

  1. Lindsay & Kyle: Agreed that heaven smells like laundry detergent.
  2. Logan: Thinks heaven will smell like limes (gotta love citrus!)
  3. Anita & I: Agreed that heaven will smell like newborn babies (the good smell)

What will heaven actually smell like? Who knows, but Logan said it best when we had all given our answers: “It will smell like that but better!”

So what do you think heaven will smell like?

P.S.: After I posted this I realized Kyle asked this same question back in January. I guess he didn’t get the answer he wanted then.

Spies Among Us

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I have had a few people tell me the past few days that they have been reading my blog. That’s awesome (not the biggest reason I write, but having nobody read would suck too). However, in a couple of these instances I had no idea they were reading.

See…there are spies among us. Sneaky ones too.

So, how about we play a little “Marco Polo”? I know not everyone like to leave a comment (I don’t understand it myself since I can’t seem to help myself…but I know it’s true). So instead of eliciting comments for their own sake (I tried and failed at that once already)…how about just leaving a “Polo” comment with your name so I can see who all is reading?

No pressure…but it wouldn’t kill you either.

And I’ll start the game with a loud…

 ”Marco!”

Now, your turn. Leave your “Polo” response in the comments…thanks…

My Presidential Platform

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I voted early yesterday. No lines. Long ballot. I’m done (but I still have to listen to all the stupid commercials…oh well, can’t have everything I guess).

As I have been thinking about voting this week I started thinking about what my own presidential platform might include. Here are a few of my most important “issues” (some serious, some not so much…you figure out which is which):

  1. My first act would be to outlaw all pennies!
  2. I would repeal the income tax and switch to a consumption tax (see Fair Tax.org).
  3. I would outlaw all political ads during election season (like they do anything besides make people angry anyway).
  4. I would re-institute prayer in schools (at least the option).
  5. I would make the Broncos the official “America’s Team” (who gave Dallas that title anyway?).
  6. I would Drill Baby Drill!
  7. I would make Chuck Norris my Secretary of Defense (and State, and NSA, CIA, and FBI).
  8. I would give every person in America hunting season off (for that matter, let’s do a 3 day work week!).
  9. I would outlaw usage of the term “organic” with very few exceptions.
  10. I would move Craig Ferguson to time slot I could actually watch.
  11. I would give North Dakota to the Palestinians (like we’re really using it anyway…and it’s bigger than the West Bank with more resources).
  12. I would cut government spending and programs by at least 1/2 and I’d probably let my kids decide what we should do without (yes, even they could figure this one out!).
  13. I would bomb France and give it to the Shiites (mostly because France annoys me).

I think that’s a good start. Anything I missed??

PS: Don’t forget to vote…especially if you want to complain about it later! You can even write my name in if you want.

Waffles and Knight Rider

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Tonight was one of those impromptu family nights that I absolutely love. They seem to come around more often in the fall when the weather turns a little colder and everyone just wants to huddle up together.

Our theme tonight was waffles and Knight Rider. For dinner I made “from scratch” waffles (they were AWESOME). After dinner we all sat down to watch the new version of Knight Rider. I remember watching this 80′s version with my family. No, it’s not quite the same but the boys love the car and the action—and we are all together.

Family memories are built on stuff like waffles and Knight Rider. Even if the kids don’t remember it…I know I will. Just enjoying each other’s company makes it worth while. And did I mention the waffles were good?

So…what are some of your favorite family memories?
