Huck & Chuck: Episode 1 – Why Mike?

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Mike Huckabee and Chuck Norris have created a series of videos covering the major issues of this presidential campaign and what Huckabee stands for on each one of them. I will be sharing them here over the course of the week.

Huckabee on Evolution

Even if you don’t agree with everything he says, you gotta love his honesty and straightforward answers…

A Pastor by Any Other Name…

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Three times in the last week I’ve had people comment on my use of the term “Pastor”. That’s how I refer to my Pastor(s). It’s not an honorary term–they’ve earned the title! They deserve the respect and honor of those God has placed under their care–myself included.

Based on the comments I received this week, however, it seems I may be a relic when it comes to using this term/title? If it had come up only once I’d think it was nothing. Twice and I’d think it was a weird coincidence. Three times? Somebody seems to be trying to tell me something!

Regardless, I will continue to use the title….even if it means I’m turning into an old fogey (never thought I’d see the day)! I can’t help how I was raised.

What’s the Difference?

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Today my devotional was in 1 Kings 15. By itself this chapter isn’t what I would call “exciting” or “ground breaking”. It’s is part of a developing pattern in the book as the author lays out the progression of kings that rule over Judah and Israel after King Solomon’s death (the nation of Israel is divided as a result of King Solomon’s disobedience). And the story is pretty much the same: a new king comes, he blows it by doing things his way versus God’s way, God punishes him (usually with a death sentence).

But chapter 15 is different for two reasons. First, it talks about King Asa (Judah) and how “Asa did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight” (11). There was something new and different. King Asa even had the guts to depose his grandmother from her royal position because she had built and Asherah pole to worship.

But the big difference comes from the following verses:

But for David’s sake, the Lord his God allowed his descendants to continue ruling, shining like a lamp, and he gave Abijam a son to rule after him in Jerusalem. For David had done what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and had obeyed the Lord’s commands throughout his life, except in the affair concerning Uriah the Hittite. (1 Kings 15:4-5)

King David had done it right…and it was still paying dividends. He had been dead for a long time by this point and God was still honoring him. Was David perfect? By no means…he had committed adultery and murder. What was the difference between King David and the other kings who blew it? Two things I see (that should be a lesson for us today):

  1. He was repentant (few of the kings in this book were…they were stubborn and determined to doing things their way)
  2. He never abandoned God (most of the kings in 1 Kings abandoned God and began worshiping idols)

David was a “man after God’s own heart”. That’s my prayer today as well…God make me into that man!

Chuck and Huck

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

I’m sure everyone (all 2 ofyou) have been wondering who I’m going to officially endorse for President. Well, the wait is over…I’m getting behind Mike Huckabee for President. There are many reasons (which I will cover in a future blog), but I’m not the only one. New Man Magazine has endoresed Huckabee (click here to read the article) and so has Chuck Norris (do you even need another reason?).

I saw two videos regarding Churck Norris and Mike Huckabee tonight. The first is funny (and serious at the same time) and is thanks to a fellow blogger’s website (that’s where I saw it first). You gotta appreciate a Presidential candidate with a sense of humor…

The second video is Chuck Norris’ endorsement of Mike Huckabee (not funny, but still a good video)…

Sages

Friday, June 8th, 2007

I got some very positive feedback on the new blog today. Most of it was centered around the entire concept of sharing my journey–the path that I’m on with God as my lead. And it got me thinking…

It got me thinking about the people who have been my earthly guides over the past 30+ years. We all have them. Those friends and family members who have shaped you into the person you are today. I suspect that many of them have no real idea just how much impact they’ve had. They are the Sages that have provided wisdom, guidance, and direction when we’ve needed it the most (even if we didn’t think we needed it). Hopefully we still have a Sage or two hanging around our lives somewhere.

So, who were (and are) the Sages in my life? Who are the men and women that have guided me along this journey? When making a list like this there is always the danger of leaving someone out. I admit up front this list is not exhaustive–it’s the super stars, the cream of the crop. Here they are:

  1. Ross & Charlotte Baumgartner: My Grandparents. They provided spiritual constancy and leadership when nobody else did. They always asked if I would attend church with them and always went the extra mile or 50 to make sure I stayed connected to God. And they have shown me over and over again the meaning of faithfulness.
  2. Dan & Denise Menefee: Anita and my youth pastors and best friends in the early stages of our marriage. Dan and Denise taught us how to make the faith of our “ancestors” our faith. They also showed us that it’s OK to have fun at the same time you are living for God.
  3. Matt & Pam Wigdahl: My Jr. and Sr. High School Teachers and close friends. They showed me to look at the world with critical eyes. They taught me that work should be fun (serious, but fun). Matt especially introduced me to a world I would never have otherwise known existed…a world of art and literature that has continued to “haunt” me ever since.

Those are my top three. I’ve been shaped by many more people…friends and family alike. Interesting to think back on those “shaping events” too. Gives me a new appreciation for the working of God’s hand in it all. He knew the people and events that would mold me best. He had a plan from the very beginning and He made sure I got what I needed–exactly when I needed it, even if it hurt.

So how about you? Who are the Sages in your life…who has shaped you into the man or woman you are today?
