Following His Example

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

I got a double whammy in my scripture reading this morning. With Father’s Day fast approaching (how did that happen so soon), a specific phrase kept leaping off the page at me. Now, I’m not usually one to use a “Hallmark holiday” such as Father’s Day as a reminder of how we dads are supposed to act (I’d much rather do the celebration thing instead).

Even so, the words I read this morning are a good reminder. I’m in the portion of 1 Kings where the author is running through all of the kings that lead Judah and Israel after King Solomon’s death. It’s a long list…primarily because each one of them did “evil in the Lord’s sight”. As a result He wiped them off the planet (you’d have thought the later kings would have put two and two together).

What caused these men to go so far off the rails? Here’s the cause for almost every one of them (with King Asa being the main exception). This is just one example out of many that say the same thing in one form or another…

“[Nadab] did what was evil in the Lord’s sight and followed the example of his father…” (1 Kings 15:26, NLT)

What a reminder for all of use dads. Generations of Israelites had to put up with bad kings who led them down the wrong path all because these men did what came naturally to them…they followed their father’s example. Reminds me of the sappy Philips, Craig, and Dean song…only because it’s true…

God Knows Our Secret

Friday, April 11th, 2008

I was not planning on blogging today, but God had other plans. Sometimes when He speaks I just need to write about it. Sharing it and blogging about it is a form of prayer and communion as I work out the things God is speaking in my life. I hope it helps others, but I know it helps me.

And this morning God revealed that He knows our secret…yours and mine. I thought we had kept it well under wraps but He figured it out anyway. I even allowed myself to think that nobody else noticed…it was a truth I (we) keep to myself and do everything I can to disguise it.

What’s the secret God knows?

The Lord is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.

For He knows how weak we are;
he remembers we are only dust.
Psalm 103:13-14 (NLT)

See…He knows! And He loves us still.

The Wrong Question

Monday, January 21st, 2008

We are going through a sermon series at our church (Pinecrest Community Church) on the book of Genesis. We are only three chapters in and it has been challenging, controversial, and enlightening.

Yesterday, Pastor preached on Genesis 3. This is the chapter where The Fall occurs…where Adam and Eve blow it by disobeying God (with a little help from You Know Who). As I was reading the passage I was struck by something in the exchange between God and Adam…especially since I’m a father. In the story, Adam and Eve have already sinned, have already felt guilty, and are hiding from God as He comes into the garden to walk with them. Here is God’s response:

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day,
and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”
Genesis 3:8-9 (NLT)

So here’s what strikes me…God asked the wrong question! Every dad on the planet knows what the right question was for the circumstance: What have you done? Adam has just blown it…big time…and God doesn’t even bring it up! Now there are some who would say that He already knew what Adam had done…but He already knew where Adam was hiding too. So the question was more for Adam’s sake than God’s.

The question God asks blows me away. He isn’t as concerned with Adam’s action (although He does care and Adam pays the price)…He is more concerned with His relationship with Adam. God had come to the garden to walk with Adam and Eve…to spend time with the. And when He got there they were hiding from Him. I think it broke God’s heart!

And it makes me wonder how often I hide from God and how much it breaks His heart. I have to pay the price for my sinful actions, but God is always more concerned with my relationship with Him. When I am far from Him I can almost hear his voice asking: “Where are you?”

Fear and Fire

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

I just  finished the book of Hebrews as part of my daily devotionals. Looking back on my notes, one verse stands out (at least right now). Hebrews is typically viewed as a book about faith (for good reason), but this particular verse is about something more…

Since we are receiving a Kingdom that cannot be destroyed,
let us be thankful and please God
by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.
For our God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:28-29

Two things in particular strike me about this passage (and there’s a lot in there to unpack):

  1. How we please God is by worshiping Him. But not just any kind of worship…we are called to worship Him with “Holy Fear” and “Awe”. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see much in the way of holy fear OR awe…even in Christian circles nowadays. Where has it gone? Am I just not seeing it? I certainly don’t think I live my life that way very often.

  2. So, why should we worship God like this? I love this part…because God is a consuming fire! Our God is dangerous, risky, powerful. He consumes our lives with the fire of His Spirit. This is an image that inspires me…deep down in the depths of my soul.

I’m still on the journey, still learning, but this passage challenges me to look at how I worship God. I certainly shouldn’t be worshiping Him meekly…I am to worship Him with awe and respect. And He is a consuming fire that will inhabit that praise and my life.

Lord, consume my life…every part…with your fire!
