More About Me…

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Anita got an email this week from a friend of hers with a list of 50 odd questions and answers. It’s one of those things you’re supposed to answer and then forward to all your friends…who are then supposed to answer and send them back to you (makes my head hurt). Anyway, the list had some fun questions and I’ve been looking for a way to “spice up” my About Me page so I took 32 of the questions and added them there.

I won’t copy the entire list here…but check out the About Me page and take a look. Feeling adventurous? Copy the list and answer them yourself…kind of fun.

CSS Naked Day 2008

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

UPDATE: CSS Naked Day is over…the post makes less sense now. On to more productive things!

Naked Day '08

Why does the Journeyman Journal look so bad today?
Because today is the Annual CSS Naked Day.
Ugly isn’t it?

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets and it’s the technology behind most website design nowadays (including mine). For one day, this (and many other) websites worldwide will go “naked” (removing all CSS) to promote Web Standards (I know…geeky).

To learn more visit the Annual CSS Naked Day website for more information.

The site will be back to normal tomorrow…until then, I’m naked!

Calling All Comments…

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

This particular post has one goal…to encourage more interaction on Journeyman Journal. I’m calling for more comments. Now I must confess that I will continue to blog even if nobody reads or cares because it’s therapeutic, but having interaction on the site makes the whole experience richer for everyone.

I recognize that there may be several reasons that I don’t get many comments on the site. I can think of three main reasons off the top of my head (if I missed any, please comment on it):

  1. You don’t know how to leave a comment. This one I can solve for you since it is a very simple process. There are two ways to navigate to leave a comment: a. Click on the post title above (in this case, “Calling All Comments…” or b) Click on the “X Comments” link at the end of the post. Either will pull up the individual post and there is a place at the bottom to leave your comment. It’s that simple.
  2. You’re too shy to leave a comment. I’ve actually heard this one from a few people who think they don’t have anything to say or add…or are just plain afraid to give it a shot. I promise it’s painless and I will usually respond to your comments…that’s kinda the point…I want to hear what others think about what I think. Agree. Disagree. Call me an idiot. You name it…I’ll take it.
  3. Nobody is reading the blog. I surely hope this isn’t the case…I hope my thoughts aren’t just going into cyberspace. I truly value your thoughts and opinions. This isn’t intended to be a one-person show.

Need a few ideas? Let me know how you like the new site design. Politics? Broncos? Your insights on God’s Word. Examples and stories from your own life. Basically…anything is fair game.

So am I begging? Maybe. I am on a journey and I’m hoping there are a few others along with me. God is speaking into my life and I love sharing what He’s doing. Feel free to comment on my journey and add stuff from your journey too. And don’t worry, I don’t bite…hard.

WordPress Upgrade Day

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Today was the day I took the plunge on upgrading my blog. I did two major upgrades:

  1. Upgraded to WordPress 2.5 (just released this weekend). For those of you who don’t blog this might not mean much. WordPress is the software that makes this website possible. This latest upgrade has been in the works for awhile and so far I love it!! I was surprised how easy it was to complete the upgrade. I did it manually in under an hour and most of that time was deleting and uploading files. If you’re curious about this please let me know…would be happy to help anyone out looking to do the same.
  2. Upgrade my blog theme. This one you can see for yourself and it took much longer than the software upgrade. I was going to wait until Journeyman Journal was a year old (coming up), but I just couldn’t wait. Let me know what you think of the new look. I still have plenty of tweaking to do, but so far I am pleased with this change as well.

I’m sure this is only the start…again, let me know what you think!

Happy Easter!!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

I realized this morning that I had let Easter go by and hadn’t blogged about it. How could this happen? Two reasons:

  1. Easter is a B-U-S-Y day! Packed church services and spending the remainder of the day with family. It’s a good kind of busy, but it doesn’t leave much room for blogging…I do have a few higher priorities.  =0)
  2. This Easter felt different than most. Easter Sunday is usually one of those “special” religious days. I mean, just about everyone goes to church on Easter Sunday (our church had roughly 50% more attendance this past week) because it’s a special day. But this year it didn’t feelspecial to me. But that’s not a bad thing. It didn’t feel special because I feel like every Sunday is Easter Sunday…I am growing in my walk with Christ and His sacrifice is on my mind and in my spirit more than once a year. And I’m not alone in this regard. My fellow blogger and cousin, Rachel Adair had the same comments in her blog yesterday. You can read it here.

I hope you had a great Easter yourself. Time with God. Time with family. Time to remember the ultimate sacrifice made just for you. Always blows my mind…I know someone who died for me. He died for you too…

One Week

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I obviously haven’t been blogging much lately.

No excuses, but I’ve simply been too busy with school, a new job, Band of Brothers, Elder meetings, teaching a new class at church (which I love!), and my standard husband and dad stuff.

But I now have a week off of school (which is the biggest time consumer of them all) before I start back into my next class. Thank goodness!!  =0)

We had a great President’s Day weekend. Mainly took Saturday off…laying around the house, some cleaning, and finishing up a little homework. Sunday was typical…church in the morning and a fun Life Group at night. Yesterday was especially fun…just hanging out with the family. We went to my office and unpacked it (I know, not much fun…but the kids love going through security) and then we went and say The Spiderwick Chronicles. Good movie (bordering on great). I highly recommend it, especially if you can catch the matinee (not many movies now-a-days worth the full price).

So this week I am determined to take a little “brain rest” and spend some quality time with God, my family, and hopefuly blogging a little bit more. Next week it’s back into the frying pan!

The 100th Blog…

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

My very first blogged was posted 7 months ago to the day (June 7, 2007) and this is officially my 100th blog entry on the Journeyman Journal!! When I started, I had the following in mind:

My intent is for the Journeyman Journalto be a repository of random thoughts and ideas–a place for me to share what God is doing in my life and have a place to sharpen the often wild and crazy ideas the Spirit lays on me. This is my place to get out the random thoughts so that I can come back to them and formalize them. Often the topics will focus on the spiritual journey, but that won’t be the sole focus–there is always time to discuss the more mundane (but still exciting) aspects of life such as the Broncos, the news of the world, and life in general. After all, God created them and has us on the journey in the midst of it all.

By and large, I think I have accomplished the goal so far…and it’s been fun! I’m still a hack trying to find my way, but this has certainly been a good tool for me (not sure how many are actually reading and/or getting anything out of it, but it serves my purpose).

By way of reflection, and in chronological order, here are my own personal Top 10 Posts from the first 99 Blogs (your mileage may vary):

  1. Sages - June 8th
  2. The Lighter Side- July 4th
  3. The Great Sand Dunes- July 16th
*Be sure you watch the video on this post…it’s priceless.
  4. Practical Atheism- September 16th
         *My favorite more serious post
  5. Pennies Should be Outlawed- September 19th
  6. The Taser - October 22nd
*Be FAR the funniest post. I challenge you NOT to laugh!
  7. Lunch with a 5 Year Old – October 31st
  8. Chuck and Huck - November 29th
  9. Don’t Judge By the Cover - December 4th
*The surprise video of the year!
  10. Presents for Jesus- December 8th
*One of my favorite Kyle stories (this and the time he told us he was going through puberty at age 5)

Again, thanks for reading and for your comments through the year…keep them coming!

Stay tuned…more to come…

Just Passing Through

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

I think I may have found a theme verse for the Journeyman Journal blog this morning during my devotional reading:

Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
Remind me that my days are numbered—how fleeting my life is.
For I am your guest—a traveler passing through, as my ancestors were before me.
Psalm 39:4, 12b

David gives a stark reminder that my time here on earth is both brief and transitory. I need to keep this in mind and treasure every moment with my family and friends. I may be “a traveler passing through”, but I want to make the journey count—and that’s kind of the point of this blog…to record my thoughts along the path God is taking me.

Life is truly a journey and it’s more meaningful when you take God along with you! Thanks for being on the journey with me too.

Subscribe to Journeyman Journal

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

I finally got my act together (thanks again to Grant) and have updated the blog to include two different ways to stay up-to-date with each new post. Both are now a permanent part of the side bar (on the left). Here’s a brief description of each:

  1. RSS Feeds: Stands for “Really Simple Syndication”.  Wikipedia describes RSS as “a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a “feed,” “web feed,” or “channel,” contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that’s easier than checking them manually.” If you’ve got an RSS-enabled website or feed-reader (such as My Yahoo!), you can subscribe to the blog Posts and/or Comments using the links in the side bar.
  2. Email Subscription: If you just don’t want to mess with RSS (you really should take the time to learn RSS) you can also subscribe to the blog posts via email. Just enter your email address on the side bar and click “Subscribe”. Follow the instructions and once you’re setup you’ll get a daily email with any new blog posts.

As always, thanks for checking in…and keep those comments coming!!
