Cutting the Rope

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

This afternoon I finished a two-month-long journey through the book of Acts. I’ve read it several times, but every time I read it I am reminded of some great stories from the early days of Christianity. It’s always good to look back, especially at the lives of Peter and Paul as they followed God’s leading to start something that would shape the world forever…and that’s certainly shaped me.

In addition to getting a few reminders I almost always read something I’ve read a thousand times before in some new light. And that happened this afternoon as I finished the book. Paul is on his way to Rome having appealed his absurd case to Caesar. Along the way the ship they’re on gets into a bad storm (which would have been avoided had the captain listened to Paul, but that’s another story).

At the end of this horrific storm the sailors run the ship aground and are about to abandon ship. Wise in human standards…not so much a part of God’s plans though…

Then the sailors tried to abandon the ship; they lowered the lifeboat as though they were going to put out anchors from the front of the ship. But Paul said to the commanding officer and the soldiers, “You will all die unless the sailors stay aboard.” So the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat and let it drift away. (Acts 27:30-32, NLT)

Now, by this time Paul had some credibility with the captain since everything he had warned them about had come true. So I understand why the soldiers decided to change their plans (and I must admit I would have been all for getting in that lifeboat). But what they did next is what got my attention…they cut the ropes!

There was no going back after that…no change of heart allowed. They accepted God’s plan to stay on a sinking ship instead of trying it their way. The plan made no sense, but they did it anyway. They didn’t just follow God’s plan…they got rid of the safety net. No more choice but to do it God’s way.

I wish I did that more often, but I must confess that too often I follow God’s plan but I don’t always cut the rope. Sometimes I keep the safety net in place…just in case. Now that I say it it sounds ridiculous (that’s because it is). In case what? In case God’s plan doesn’t work out? Ludicrous…He’s God and I’m not.

Again, this is the decision that Pinecrest faces as we come together over the next three weeks to seek God’s face about our direction and finances. Will we follow His plan no matter how crazy it might sound? And will we cut the ropes or will we keep our safety net intact?

Here’s one vote for cutting the ropes.

I’d Like to Find Out…

I started reading the latest book by Francis Chan, Forgotten God, this morning. I fully expected to to challenge me as his last book, Crazy Love, did. I could not have been more spot on. So much so that I’m not exactly sure what to do with what I’m reading.

It saddens me. It challenges me. It shakes me to my core spiritually.

Chan is talking about the Holy Spirit in our spiritual lives and how the Holy Spirit is supposed to be evident in our lives. But that’s not often the case. He goes so far to say…

I think the worst part is when you get outside the church’s walls and interact with believers and nonbelievers in the same sphere. Can you really tell a difference? (p 31)

OUCH! If I answer that question honestly the answer is far too often that I cannot tell the difference. And I am including myself in that indictment. But we’re supposed to be different. We’re not just supposed to ACT different (although even that doesn’t always happen); we’re supposed to BE different…

This is the question I just can’t get around: If it’s true that the Spirit of God dwells in us and that our bodies are the Holy Spirit’s temple, then shouldn’t there be a huge difference between the person who has the Spirit of God living inside of him or her and the person who does not? (p 32)

Um….yes. There should be a huge difference. So why is that not often the case? Why is that not the case in my own life?

That’s what I’m going to start examining and praying about. Where have I missed the mark? What am I holding back from God? What am I afraid will happen if I live my life fully in the presence of God’s Spirit? What would happen if I fully allowed Him to guide and direct my life on a daily basis?

That the question we’re asking over the next three weeks at Pinecrest too. As a community, what would happen if God really got a hold of us and we let Him lead…let Him do some amazing things…got out of the way and got on-board with God’s plan?

All I know is that I’m going to start this journey, because I’d like to find out…

My 2010 Bronco’s Prediction

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

It’s FINALLY that time of year again…football is in the air and all is right with the world once again!!

And I love this point in the season…when you have nothing but hopes and dreams since we haven’t played a game that actually counts yet. And I get to put down my own dreams and fears on the record for this year’s Broncos season.

I must say that I am bullish on the Donkeys for the long haul. I think they’re putting the right pieces into place but they are shallow at many positions, very young at others, and the schedule this year is brutal! That said, I still think they have a chance at the AFC West title (which is what they’ll need to make the playoffs) only because the AFC West is weak in general. And I like the foundation they are laying for the future.

What do I think about Coach McD? I don’t hate him (as many do) and I don’t necessarily love him either. I’m taking a wait and see mentality. And I’m patient (I’ve been a Bronco fan since birth so I developed that patience early on). I do know it takes time in this league to build a winner for the long haul and I’m willing to take the time and I assume McD knows more than I do. The winning and losing will tell the tale.

With that said, here’s what I think will happen this year…and I’m never right so take this all with a grain of salt (or your preferred spice of choice):

  1. @ Jacksonville – W
I think we start off strong and the offense wins this one on the road for us. If not…hold onto your hats for a long season.
  2. Seattle – W
This team is a mess and we win the home opener. Gets rougher from here…
  3. Indianapolis – L
We come back down to earth. The defense won’t be able to rush Peyton and the blitz will just burn us.
  4. @ Tennessee – L
The brutal schedule continues. I don’t see us winning our first two road games and Tennessee has plenty of firepower.
  5. @ Baltimore – L
We just won’t be able to hang with the Ravens, but I think this will be closer than some people might think.
  6. NY Jets – L
The good news? This game is at home. The bad news? It’s against the Jets!
  7. Oakland – W
Always good for what ails you. The Raiders help us stop the losing streak, but it will be a tougher game than it should be.
  8. @ San Francisco – L
I had a tough decision with this game, but I think we drop this one. My heart says a win, my head says a loss.
  9. BYE - Thank goodness!
  10. Kansas City – W
Getting better, but still a bad team on the rise.
  11. @ San Diego – L
I don’t think SD will be as good as some people think, but I still think we split the season with them.
  12. St. Louis – W
This team has a long way to go…but this game scares me! Has all the makings of a “look past” game.
  13. @ Kansas City – W
We always seem to have a tough time at Arrowhead, but I just can’t put a loss here.
  14. @ Arizona – L
Not sure why, but don’t see us pulling this one off. Defense may be getting gassed by this point. Arizona’s QB situation may help us though.
  15. @ Oakland – W
Honestly, even if I though we’d lose this one I never predict a loss against the Raiders. I just hate them too much.  ;o)
  16. Houston – L
This one is close, but I think we find a way to lose it.
  17. San Diego – W
This is the split, but why do we always seem to be playing these guys at the end. I hope this game doesn’t count for something big!

The grand total? 8-8

Does that get us into the playoffs? Errr….maybe not….but I still think we can take the division. But it’s going to take some great offense, a decent defense, and staying healthy (above everything else). With my swing games I wouldn’t be surprised by a 5-11 or 9-7 season (or anything in between). As always….that’s why they play the games!!

Are you ready for some football?!?!??
