What Should I Read Next?

Visits: 127 | Posted by: David in Books, Misc Ramblings

I need some help, so I am coming to you for some assistance. As a regular part of my devotional and spiritual life I like to read. You can see some of my favorite books here. I just finished up two very good books that have helped me grow spiritually…they challenged me and gave me new insights and practices to put into place in my journey with God: Walking with God and Messy Spirituality. I highly recommend them both (and in that order).

My problem? I don’t know what to read next. There are two books I am considering, but they aren’t so much focused on spiritual growth or development (but maybe that’s a good thing?):

  1. Simple Church
  2. unChristian

But I am not convinced that either of these is what I should pick up next. So I open the discussion up to you. What do you recommend that I read next? Leave your thoughts and recommendations in a comment and let’s work toward a final decision. Now, I have read a lot so don’t be discouraged if I’ve already read your selection…just keep ‘em coming. And thanks in advance for the help!

I recommend anything from John Piper, especially Desiring God. Currently I’m reading his book A Hunger for God. The Shack will open your eyes to the Trinity; such a different and interesting book by William P. Young. Age of Opportunity will prepare you for adolescence in the best way (Paul David Tripp). And finally the Mark of the Lion series, such a great fictional series of books that will definitely inspire you to be more of an evangelist where you live.

Let us know what you decide to read!

So “Desiring God” is your highest recommendation? I’ve heard such noise about The Shack that it’s on my list, but not sure if i can read it without thinking about all the hype–might ruin it for me?

Well David, as my garden is nearing full strength and I have planted more corn than neccessary this year. I just love how the corn looks when it grows higher than the fence line. My summer recommendation for you is “Faith Like Potatoes: The Story of a Farmer Who Risked Everything for God” -I think you will enjoy it.

Yes definitely Desiring God, if I could I’d loan you mine. But you’d probably be distracted from all of the marks I made in it. It’s so rich, so good! If you desire for your relationship and walk with God grow deeper then this book will definitely take you there.

But in the mean time I’m gonna check out the book that Nick recommended…

All right, it’s at the top of my list. And do yourself a favor and don’t ever listen to Nick…ever!

Finding Home - Jim Daly’s autobiography (new President of Focus on the Family). I haven’t read it, but I’ve read about it and it came to mind for you while I was having my devotions today…

I went to our local Christian Bookstore to find Desiring God bu they didn’t have it. The only John Piper book they had was Don’t Waste Your Life (and it was on sale) so that’s what I’m going with. Thanks for the recommendations! I will get to all of them eventually…I promise!

Yeah, I don’t rely on the bookstores for most books I’m interested in. I like Amazon for ordering books. But let me know what that book is about, I’m curious!
