Exalt the Lord our God!
Bow low before his feet, for he is holy!
Psalm 99:5 (NLT)
This was in my devotional reading this morning and it contains a phrase that I have read many times (especially in the Psalms) and it catches my eye and my attention every time: “bow low” or “bow down”.
I don’t know about you, but when I read this I am thinking: “Sure, bow down in my spirit…I have a heart that is bowed before God.” But lately this hasn’t been enough. Lately I’m wondering if I shouldn’t be literally bowing down before God. It happens all the time in Scripture…and is referenced over and over in relation to our worship and exaltation of God.
Here is my confession: I can’t think of a single time in my life when I actually, literally bowed before God in worship and/or prayer. Confession #2: Just thinking about it feel “weird”. I can’t explain it but it doesn’t feel natural. Maybe that’s part of the point??
Have you bowed before God before (in the literal sense)? If so, did it come naturally? If not, why not? Curious to hear other thoughts on this topic as I am still working through it myself…
