Twisted Worship Tunes

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Continuing with the “Video Week” theme, here is my new favorite comedian, Tim Hawkins, with a new twist on some contemporary worship songs…

Watch Lane 4

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

OK, so I didn’t intend for this to be “Video Week” but that’s what it’s turning out to be.

This one is wild…you may need to watch it a few times (it’s short) to get the full effect. After watching it, just try and convince me this guy (or gal) doesn’t have a guardian angel working overtime. Lots of underwear changes had to occur after this one…

Michael Jr. Goes Jogging

I absolutely love comedy…especially good, clean, quality comedy. I know I’m on a little bit of a video kick this week, but this guy is funny and is worth the minute and forty-five seconds. Enjoy…

Life Is Too Short

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Teach us to realize the brevity of life,
so that we may grow in wisdom.

Psalm 90:12, NLT

Life is too short. Even according to Scripture we only get somewhere around 70 to 80 years (Psalm 90:10). I got thinking about that this morning thanks to this passage. Now I don’t actually feel old or think I’m old (even though I’ve joked about it in the past). But if I have even 80 years on this rock then I am nearing the mid-point of my life.

I haven’t done everything I had hoped to do. I’m not the man I had hoped to be. And life is short. But according to this Psalm, coming to realize just how brief our life is on earth is the first step toward wisdom. Knowing it and accepting it help us life life from a different perspective. I can’t go about my day assuming I’ve got an unlimited supply of them…there is a ration of days already in place.

So it begs the question for me, how am I going to spend the days that God has given me? Am I going to waste them or am I going to invest them? Am I going to do what’s important or am I going to do what’s easy?

Tough questions for me to ponder…

Your God Is Too Safe

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Your God Is Too Safe I actually read Your God Is Too Safe book last year before I started blogging, but have picked it up again as I am using it as a sort of “textbook” for my next Faith Basics series on “Holy Habits”. The title alone got me to buy and read the book, but I got more than I bargained for! Mark Buchanan has a fresh writing style unlike anything I have read in secular or Christian works. He has a way of making the mundane come alive and getting his reader to see things from a new perspective. This book is all but guaranteed to change your spiritual journey…at worst it will get you thinking about things differently.

I have read one other book by Buchanan (The Rest of God), but Your God Is Too Safe is the better of the two. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to grow in their walk and read a new author with fresh ideas and a new style. I look forward to reading some of Buchanan’s other works as well.

Here is the excerpt from his website summarizing what Your God Is Too Safe is all about:

Here’s a thoughtful, probing exploration of why Christians get stuck in the place of complacency, dryness, and tedium — and how to move on to new levels of spiritual passion! Buchanan shows how the majority of Christians begin their spiritual journey with excitement and enthusiasm — only to get bogged down in a “borderland” — an in-between space beyond the “old life” but short of the abundant, adventurous existence promised by Jesus. Citing Jonah, he examines the problem of “borderland living” — where doubt, disappointment, guilt, and wonderlessness keep people in a quagmire of mediocrity — then offers solutions … effective ways to get unstuck and move into a bold, unpredictable, exhilarating walk with Christ. Inspired writing!

Happy reading!

The Battle for Your Soul

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

This is a powerful depiction of the battle every one of us faces in our spiritual lives.
Sometimes words just don’t say it as well as images and music.
I hope you take the time to watch it and respond to it…

I Couldn’t Resist…

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Yes, it’s a little sour grapes. No, I probably shouldn’t cast disparaging remarks about my candidate. But I just couldn’t resist sharing this one with you…

 Prickly City

There’s always a little truth in humor isn’t there?? OK, my last McCain slam…maybe…   =0)

Drive Thru Blues

Friday, March 7th, 2008

OK, I have to come clean…I hate drive thrus!! I don’t know when or how it got started, and I may not be able to explain it without making myself look like a total nut-job (perhaps its already to late for that anyway), but I H-A-T-E going through the drive thru.

Why? My wife will laugh at this answer, but here goes: THE PRESSURE!! Who needs it? I absolutely hate being the guy in line that’s holding everyone else up. It’s some sort of neurosis man! I would honestly rather walk inside of a fast food joint than go through the friggin’ drive thru and deal with all that peer pressure.

You have peer pressure from everyone in the car…trying to figure out what everyone wants and repeating it back to that stupid little voice box. Peer pressure from the guy taking the order…s/he just wants you to get on with it and move along. Peer pressure from the people behind you in line that want you to get it done so they can be next.

I know it’s weird. I know the people in the car, and the restaurant, and the cars behind aren’t as impatient as I make them out to be…but it’s too much stinking pressure!!!

If you don’t believe me…just ask my wife sometime about a blueberry bagel. She’ll know what you mean and will tell you the whole story.

Just don’t ask me to go through the drive thru!   =0)

Out But Not Down

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Yes, my man Mike Huckabee is officially out of the race for the Republican nomination. It was a sad day we all saw coming awhile ago. I can’t say I like the nominee we got (he was about fourth on my list), but he’s the guy now and I will support him, just not with as much enthusiasm as I might have a few other candidates. Such is life.

I do admire the campaign Mike ran and I admire the way that he is leaving the race. He is out of the race, but he is not down about it any way, shape, or form…and he is still sticking to his spiritual and life principles. He wrote an encouraging blog the day he got out of the race that I encourage you to read. Click here to read it.

I’m also interested watching what’s happening on the Democratic side as well. If nothing else, this year has been more fun to watch on all sides…and it isn’t even close to being over yet.

What’s in store for my man Mike? There’s always 2012 right??  =0)

Would They Miss Me?

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

We had a special speaker this Sunday in church. His name is Jon Talbert and he was there speaking to us about our new compassion and outreach ministry called Beautiful Day. Jon is the Compassion Pastor at Westgate Church in southern California where the Beautiful Day concept got started. Westgate asked themselves this question: “If our church were to disappear tomorrow, would the community even notice? Would they miss us?”

It’s a great question, and God has been using it in my life this week. Of course, He has made it more personal. The question He has placed on my heart this week goes something like this: “David, if you were replaced at work would anybody notice? Would they miss you?” Now I know they would miss the work I’m doing, but that can easily be replaced. The real heart of the question is would the people I work with notice…have I made any sort of lasting impact on their lives…especially their spiritual lives?

I’m not sure I like the answer, but it’s a question I have to deal with…
