What Would You Do?

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Not sure why, but I woke up this morning thinking about a philosophical question I read in a book a few months ago. The question goes something like this:

If you knew you couldn’t fail,
and there were no obstacles standing in your way,
what would you do?

Again, I don’t know why this question came to mind this particular morning…but it’s fun to ponder the possibilities. One thing I’m pretty sure about is that I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now (vocationally). The good news for me is that I’m confident I am on the right path now that I’m going back to school and answering God’s calling. I have a passion for teaching. And would love nothing more than to use that gift in the church and broader community.

So what about you? What would you do? Are you doing it now? What’s standing in your way? I truly believe that God wants us to fulfill our passions and gifts (that’s why He gave them to us). Now, that doesn’t always translate into a vocation (sometimes work is an ends to a means…I think), but it translates into finding that thing (to quote City Slickers, “That one thing”) that stirs your heart and moves you to action.

What would you do??

Love One Another

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

I have been in 1st and 2nd John this past week in my devotions and one concept keeps coming to the surface–loving one another. In just these 2 books John uses the phrase “love one another” 6 times (and they are short books). Did a search on Biblegateway.com and the New Testament lists the phrase 13 times. Here’s one example:

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God.
Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.
1 John 4:7 (NLT)

As I thought and prayed about this concept this morning two thoughts come to mind:

  1. Love one another is important to God…and should therefore be important to us (keeping in mind that these passages were written specifically to Christ followers) AND

  2. God obviously sees this as a potential problem among His children because He keeps reminding us to do it (must not come all that naturally)

It’s easy to think this commandment is so simple…and it is in theory. Putting it into practice when the “rubber meets the road” is often a very different thing. Am I willing to put my own interests and concerns and comfort aside and instead seek the best interests of my brother or sister in Christ? Easier said than done…but Christ is (as usual) our example. As men are nailing Him to a cross He focuses not on Himself but extends them grace.

Not so sure I would have been so gracious and loving. Not sure I’m doing it today.

I’m a Rockies Fan?

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

I can’t hardly believe it, but there I was last night glued to the TV watching the Rockies do the unthinkable. I can honestly say that I haven’t watched a game all year (not even more than 10 minutes of any game). And yet I couldn’t help myself last night…and I was actually caught up in the moment…hoping they would pull off the impossible win (especially after Julio basically gave the game away…what is up with that guy anyway? Haven’t seen such poor body language on a professional player before…like he expected to blow it).

Am I “bandwagoner”? Yep! Jumped on last night. Not sure how long I’ll stay on for the ride…but it sure was fun watching the bottom of the 13th last night. Here’s hoping more wins are on the way. (Need something since the Broncos seem bent on sucking this year).
